La Massana is an area for enjoying nature with family and friends. In winter, skiing is the star sport combined with other disciplines such as snow shoes, mountain skiing, snow bikes, horse trails…and when the snow melts, excursions to Comapedrosa Nature Reserve are a unique experience to discover the high mountain flora and fauna and follow the trails marked with different levels of difficulty.
La Massana is towered over by the principality’s highest peak, Comapedrosa, at 2,942 metres. The view is spectacular from this giant rock. Hikers also have the only guarded refuge in the country. In summer, the ski resorts change to a wide variety of options: MTB, 4x4 trails, climbing, canyoning, children’s areas… Vallnord is the real Pyrenees Mountain Park.
The most demanding tourists will find a wide selection of activities in La Massana. There are many Romanesque churches in the parish such as Sant Cristòfol d’Anyós and Sant Climent de Pal. The village is home to the Romanesque Interpretation Centre with its clear instructional display of the keys to introducing this style in Andorra. As for museums, Casa Rull in Sispony takes visitors back to daily life for a wealthy country family in the 19th century. Rossell Forge is the jewel in La Massana’s museum selection where the operation of one of the most important foundries in the country is shown. With regards to food, La Massana offers mountain cuisine with an abundance of pork, eggs, game, mushrooms and vegetables. There are several traditional restaurants around the parish. Shops in La Massana sell the country’s typical sausages to the latest fashion trends.
La Massana is a high mountain parish combining a wide selection of nature and adventure with high quality cultural offers. La Massana is home to top-quality hotel and tourist infrastructures. On an international level, it is renowned by mountain bike lovers since Vallnord has become the first mountain park in the Pyrenees. In winter, the ski slopes attract thousands of visitors who have access to marvellous facilities in La Massana resorts planned so that all the family can spend the best holidays. Nature in its purest state can be experienced in La Massana. La Massana constantly works to preserve and promote Comapedrosa Nature Reserve, a unique space presided over by the highest peak in the Principality at 2,942 metres.
On a cultural level, the great attraction in the parish is Massana Còmic, a top-quality fair which has become a meeting point for great graphic novel authors. This event is held over the last weekend in April and is already in its twelfth edition. Andoflorais also held in spring every year. This is the market fair for plants and flowers where great florist artists display their talent. Andoflora is a place to wander around and buy plants and flowers, but it also offers top-notch workshops and competitions as well as children's shows, demonstrations and parades and other nature activities.
La Massana is Andorra’s fourth parish in order of protocol. It extends over 65 square kilometres, most being woods, and is home to around 10,000 residents. It borders Ordino to the north, Ordino and Encamp to the east, Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany to the south and Auzat (Arièja), Alins de Vallferrera (Pallars Sobira) and the Valira Valleys (Alt Urgell) to the west.
The parish’s central orographic axis comprises the valleys of the Pal and Arinsal rivers and, to the south by the Valira del Nord Valley.
The terrain is mountainous and the highest peaks are: Comapedrosa (2,942 m), Medacorba (2,914 m), Sanfonts (2,888 m), Pla de l’Estany (2,859 m) and Racofred (2,837 m).
The largest lakes include the Forcats, the Montmantell, Negre Lake and Les Truites Lake. Agriculture takes up 262 ha (14% of all Andorra) and in summer the traditional livestock blessing is held in the Setúria bordes.
Growth in the area is based on tourism in mountain sports, construction and real estate. Vallnord is the driving engine behind tourism. The resort comprises Pal and Arinsal sectors (in La Massana) and Ordino-Arcalís (located in the neighbouring Ordino parish).
La Massana houses different facilities and sports services such as open slopes in the Prat del Colat park, the multi-purpose slope in the Camp de Santa Caterina, the children’s areas in the different villages and – privately owned – the Anyós Sports Centre, El Torrent Golf Course in Xixerella and Aldosa Riding Club.
There are Romanesque vestiges across Andorra. La Massana heritage comprises Sant Antoni bridge and the churches of Sant Cristòfol d’Anyós, Sant Andreu del Prat del Campanar d’Arinsal, Sant Climent de Pal and Sant Romà d’Erts. Precisely in order to understand this artistic style, the Romanesque Andorra centre was set up. La Massana houses two further museums: the Casa Rull Ethnographic Museum, in Sispony, and Rossell Forge, an old refitted forge explaining how iron was worked. La Massana parish comprises seven areas: la Massana, l’Aldosa, Anyós, Sipony, Arinsal, Erts and Pal.
