Escaldes-Engordany

The parish of Escaldes-Engordany, the second most inhabited after Andorra la Vella, comprises two urban centres, separated and very different. The oldest is Engordany which has been inhabited since around the 2nd or 1st century BC.

It is known that there were small inhabited centres in the Middle Ages: Engordany, Els Vilars, El Fener and Engolasters. These were cattle and farming communities. Small groups of artisans gradually appeared, such as those working with wool: the wool carders who used the hot springs to wash and dye the wool. This led to the appearance and concentration of a rudimentary wool industry in Escaldes.

The great change, however, occurred towards the 1930s with the construction of the road network and the FHASA (Forces Hidroelèctriques d’Andorra SA) hydroelectricity company concession in the period also marked by the divergent development of Engordany (which kept its traditional farming and livestock tradition, presently mainly residential) and Escaldes (positioned towards tourism with its hot springs and commerce).

Escaldes-Engordany grew rapidly, initially linked to its hot springs and first spa hotels and then to the increase in commercial tourism. It won political and administrative independence with the creation of the parish of Escaldes-Engordany on 14th June 1978.

One of the great natural values of this district is the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, covering an area of some 4,247 hectares, where water is also a fundamental element. The valley is interesting not only for its natural heritage (vegetation and fauna) but also for its cultural heritage reflecting mountain life from the Middle Ages (bordes, shepherd’s cabins, dry stone wall constructions, etc.). For this reason, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
